A recent study published in the journal Science has found that playing games can improve individuals’ cognitive skills in the long term. The research, led by scientists at the University of California, Irvine, involved 80 participants who were assigned to play either a fast-paced action game or a slow-paced strategy game for a total of 40 hours over a span of six weeks. The participants’ cognitive abilities were then assessed before and after the gameplay period. The results showed that those who played the action game experienced an improvement in their working memory and cognitive flexibility, whereas those who played the strategy game did not show significant changes. These findings suggest that action games, which require quick decision-making and quick reactions, can have a positive impact on cognitive skills. However, more research is needed to determine the specific elements of action games that lead to cognitive improvements and how these findings can be applied in educational settings or in the development of cognitive training programs.
